Welcome to First Christian Church at Burlington
Who We Are
First Christian Church was founded in 1908 and has been an active and involved part of the city of Burlington and the broader community ever since.
We believe that worship truly does nourish the soul, and offer many opportunities to engage in it, including a regular Sunday morning service, Sunday school classes for all ages, as well as Bible studies and various groups throughout the week.
First Christian Church is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) whose stated mission to be “a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world”
As part of that movement, we observe communion each Sunday, and all who seek Christ are welcome at God’s table.
We strive to be a community that reflects the love and light of Jesus Christ, and hope to be place for soul care, thoughtful reflection, and a spiritual growth.
Sundays
Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m., with classes from pre k through adult
Our Worship service begins at 10:30 a.m.
(Many Sundays we have food and fellowship following worship)
Communion
In the Disciples tradition, we celebrate Holy Communion every week, partaking of the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. You don’t have to be a church member to participate in the Lord’s Supper with us. In fact, it’s not required that you be a member of any church, as communion is open to all who seek Christ.
We remember Christ in the breaking of the bread and the drinking of the cup for Jesus asked us to “Do this in remembrance of me.”
Chalice Symbol
The chalice symbol represents the centrality of communion. Gathered at the table each Sunday, we proclaim Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. There, we remember him.
The chalice reminds us that our worship hinges on this act of remembrance and God's grace that brings us together.
